    Key Types & Materials: 
    • PTFE (Teflon): Common for seats and stem seals, offering excellent chemical resistance and low friction.
    • Elastomers (O-Rings/X-Rings): Used for stem seals and sometimes seats, relying on compression for sealing.
    • Graphite Gaskets: Often a secondary or fire-safe material, providing excellent fire resistance. 
    How They Work: 
    • Compression: Seals are compressed between stationary parts (e.g., valve body and ball).
    • Spring-Loaded/Energized: Belleville washers or other springs maintain constant pressure on the seal against the ball or stem.
    • Body-Energized (PTFE): Internal pressure pushes the PTFE seal outwards against the ball or stem. 
    Applications & Features: 
    • Fire-Safe: If the primary soft seal burns away, a metal-to-metal backup seal activates, maintaining integrity.
    • Anti-Static: Devices like springs connect the ball to the body, preventing static buildup that could ignite flammable media.
    • In-Line Repairable: Some designs allow stem seal replacement with the valve in place, notes FluoroSeal.
