Scanning Electron Microscopy | Nanoscience Instruments
Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) provides high-resolution (1–nm range),, 3D topographical images of surfaces by using a Field Emission Gun (FEG) to produce a narrow, high-density electron beam. Unlike conventional SEMs, FESEM minimizes sample damage, works better at low voltages, and reduces static charging, making it ideal for imaging tiny, non-conductive, or delicate materials.
    Key Components and Principles
    • Field Emission Gun (FEG): Emits electrons via a high electrical field gradient rather than heat, allowing for a smaller spot size and higher brightness.
    • Imaging and Signals: Detects secondary electrons (for topography) and backscattered electrons (for atomic number contrast).
    • Magnification: Achieves ultra-high resolution (up to
      1
      ,

      ) at low voltages (
      0.5
      –

      kV).
    • Types of FEG: Uses cold field emitters or Schottky (thermally assisted) emitters.
    Advantages over Conventional SEM
    • Higher Resolution: Provides

nm resolution, which is 3-6 times better than conventional SEM.
    • Reduced Charging: Low-voltage capability allows imaging of non-conductive samples with minimal or no conductive coating.
    • Better Signal-to-Noise Ratio: FEG provides a more stable and concentrated beam.
    • Versatile Imaging: Compatible with EDS for chemical analysis and EBSD for crystallography.
    Common Applications
    • Nanomaterials: Imaging nanoparticles, nanotubes, and nanofibers.
    • Life Sciences: Viewing biological samples at high resolution.
    • Material Science: Analyzing fracture surfaces, coatings, and semiconductor, defects.
    Common Detectors
    • In-Lens Detector: High-resolution secondary electron imaging.
    • Everhart-Thornley Detector (E-T): Topography contrast.
    • BSE/STEM: Composition and Transmission imaging.
    Sample Preparation
    • Requires clean samples.
    • Non-conductive samples can be imaged with specialized low-vacuum or variable pressure modes, but conductive coating is still used for higher resolutions.
