    Key Features and Functions 
    • Purpose: Act as a backup seal to protect the casing head/spool connection from wellbore fluids.
    • Types: Include elastomer (P-seals, PEs), metal-to-metal seals, or specialized [HPE seals] for high-pressure/high-temperature (HPHT) applications.
    • Installation: Installed in the bottom preparation of casing spools/tubing heads and held by snap wires or threaded plates.
    • Testing: Used in conjunction with test ports to verify the integrity of the seal and the flange connection.
    • Emergency Applications: Includes slip-type hangers and packoffs for when casing gets stuck. 
    Common Configurations 
    • PE Secondary Seals: Designed for low-pressure, general-purpose use, sealing against the casing and wellhead.
    • HPE Secondary Seals: Designed for high-pressure environments.
    • S-Seals: Engineered as a replacement for T-seals and O-rings, providing high pressure and temperature resistance, often using Norsok M710-certified materials. 
    Secondary seals can also be designed to act as a pressure crossover, reducing the area exposed to pressure within the spool.
