    AI Overview
Single epoxy-based reactive diluents, such as monofunctional glycidyl ethers (e.g., C12–C14 aliphatic, butyl glycidyl ether) and difunctional types (e.g., BDO, HDGE), are low-viscosity compounds that chemically react into the matrix to reduce epoxy resin viscosity, improve handling, and enhance flexibility without significant loss of physical properties. They act as viscosity reducers, improve wetting, and allow higher filler loading.
    Common Types of Reactive Diluents
    • Monofunctional Reactive Diluents: These provide the best viscosity reduction, often used in flooring and coatings for excellent flow. Examples include:
      • C12–C14 Aliphatic Glycidyl Ether: Known for high efficiency in reducing viscosity and improving flexibility.
      • 2-Ethylhexyl Glycidyl Ether (EHGE): Offers very low viscosity (approx. 2-5 cP).
      • Butyl Glycidyl Ether (BGE): Known for low viscosity and high volatility among glycidyl ethers.
      • Phenyl Glycidyl Ether (PGE): Used when aromatic character is needed.
      • Cardanol-based Diluents: Derived from cashew nut shell liquid, offering good flexibility and water resistance.
    • Difunctional/Polyfunctional Reactive Diluents: These offer lower viscosity than base resins but maintain better structural properties than monofunctional types.
      • 1,4-Butanediol Diglycidyl Ether (BDDGE/BDO): Known for low viscosity (14-16 cP) while preserving chemical resistance.
      • Neopentyl Glycol Diglycidyl Ether (NPG): Provides good performance in adhesive formulations.
    Key Performance Impacts
    • Viscosity Reduction: Drastically lowers viscosity for easier processing.
    • Crosslink Density: Generally lowers the crosslink density, increasing flexibility but potentially reducing the glass transition temperature (
      Tgcap T sub g
      𝑇𝑔
      ) and thermal resistance.
    • Flexibility: Long-chain diluents act as internal plasticizers, improving elongation.
    • Wetting and Levelling: Improves surface wetting and reduces defects such as orange peel in coatings.
    Selection Guide
    • Low Viscosity/High Flow: C12-C14 Aliphatic Glycidyl Ether.
    • Toughness/Composites: BDO-based (Difunctional).
    • Chemical Resistance/Hardness: Aromatic-based glycidyl ethers.
    • Bio-based Alternatives: Monophenol derivatives (guaiacol, carvacrol, thymol).
For practical application, ensuring compatibility with the base resin is key, as the diluent must participate in the crosslinking reaction. For detailed options and technical specifications, suppliers often provide in-depth guides (e.g., NAGASE Group's EX-313 details).
