MEMS Accelerometer Gyroscope Magnetometer & Arduino
MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) accelerometers operate by using a microscopic, silicon-based proof mass suspended by springs that shifts under acceleration, causing a change in electrical capacitance between fixed and moving electrodes . This displacement is converted by an ASIC into an electrical signal proportional to the acceleration/vibration.
    Core Working Principle
    • Proof Mass Displacement : A tiny silicon structure (proof mass) is suspended by springs. When acceleration, tilt, or vibration occurs, inertia causes this mass to move from its resting position.
    • Capacitive Sensing : The moving mass has fingers that act as electrodes, nested between fixed, stationary electrodes. When the mass shifts, the distance between these capacitor plates changes.
    • Signal Conversion : The change in capacitance is proportional to the acceleration. The MEMS sensor translates this change into an electrical output (voltage), which is then processed by an integrated ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) to provide a usable, calibrated digital or analog signal.
    Components and Manufacturing
    • Silicon Structure : Fabricated using techniques like photolithography and etching to create microscopic beams, springs, and mass structures on a wafer.
    • Packaging : The sensor is often sealed in a protective package (ceramic or plastic) that protects the delicate MEMS structure.
    • Damping : To prevent the proof mass from moving too freely (resonance), MEMS accelerometers often use squeeze-film gas damping within the sealed cavity.
    Key Features
    • Multiple Axes : Most modern MEMS accelerometers can measure acceleration in 2 or 3 axes simultaneously.
    • Mass Production : The technology allows high-volume, low-cost production, suitable for consumer electronics and automotive applications.
