    How They Work Together

    • Harmonic Filters: Reactors (inductors) are added in series with capacitors to create tuned circuits that "trap" or shunt specific harmonic frequencies (like 5th, 7th) away from the main system.
    • Combined Benefit: This setup provides both power factor correction and protects against harmonic-induced issues like overheating, resonance, and equipment malfunction, which simple capacitor banks alone can worsen. 
    Types of Harmonic Filters Used 
    • Detuned Filters: Use reactors to "detune" the bank slightly, preventing resonance at fundamental frequency.
    • Notch Filters (Band-Pass): Tuned to a specific frequency (e.g., 180 Hz for the 3rd harmonic).
    • High-Pass Filters: Block higher-order harmonics.
    • Multi-Tuned Filters: Combine multiple tuned circuits for broader harmonic mitigation. 
    Key Components in the Bank 
    • Capacitors: For power factor correction and filtering.
    • Reactors (Inductors): To tune filters and limit inrush current.
    • Resistors: For damping and inrush current control.
    • Contactors/Thyristors: For switching steps (in switched banks).
    • Fuses & Protection Relays: For safety and monitoring. 
    When to Use Them 
    • In facilities with non-linear loads (VFDs, LEDs, UPS, arc welders) that generate harmonics.
    • When simple capacitor banks cause resonance or over-voltages due to existing harmonics.
    • To avoid power factor penalties and increase system capacity.
