When You Have One "R" Wire (Most Common)
- Connect to RH: Your single red power wire (R) goes into the RH terminal.
- Jumper Check: Smart thermostats usually handle the switch, but if you see a small wire or staple connecting RH and RC, remove it for modern systems, as the thermostat manages this internally.
- If No Heat/Cool: If it doesn't work, try moving the R wire to RC, or connect it to R if available (like on Nest Thermostat E), as the internal logic often allows either.
When You Have Separate "R", "Rh", & "Rc" Wires (Dual Transformer Systems)
- Rh (Red Heat): Connect the red wire from your furnace to the Rh terminal.
- Rc (Red Cool): Connect the red wire from your air conditioner to the Rc terminal.
- Remove Jumper: Do not use the jumper wire if you have separate Rh and Rc wires from your wall.
