    AI Overview
Optical sorters for blended fabric identification utilize advanced Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to analyze the chemical composition of textiles, allowing them to differentiate between complex, mixed fibers (e.g., poly-cotton, nylon-spandex) that traditional NIR (Near-Infrared) sensors often miss.
    Key Technology: AI-Powered Hyperspectral Sorters
    • DataBeyond Technology has launched a specialized AI-powered hyperspectral sorter for blended fabrics, specifically aimed at sorting mixed materials with up to 99% accuracy.
    • Spectral Bands: These machines use sensors that capture 256 spectral bands to create a full-spectrum recognition of textile waste.
    • Composition Range: The technology can accurately identify and separate textiles containing 30–80% polyester, nylon, spandex, and cotton, enabling precise, high-quality recycling.
    • Application: These sorters can sort garments by material composition, color, and remove impurities like buttons or zippers.
    Top Industry Solutions & Manufacturers
    • DataBeyond (FASTSORT-TEXTILE): Known for its AI-driven optical sorters designed for blended fabric sorting in the Chinese market.
    • Specim FX17: A hyperspectral camera operating in the 900–1700 nm range, used for detecting fiber blends, including cotton, polyester, viscose, and wool.
    • TOMRA Sorting Solutions: Uses high-resolution NIR technology combined with AI (GAINnext) for identifying and sorting textiles, including black textiles and complex blends.
    • Fibersort (by Valvan): Technology that uses NIR and RGB cameras for identifying and separating textiles based on fiber type and color.
    • FabriTell: A handheld, instant-identification device for fabrics using infrared analysis for instant identification of blends.
    Advantages over Conventional Sorting
    1. High Accuracy: Unlike traditional Near-Infrared (NIR) sensors that often misclassify, HSI and AI can detect the specific blend ratios.
    2. Dark Fabric Identification: New AI-driven technology can identify dark-colored or black textiles, which are usually a blind spot for traditional optical sorting.
    3. Efficiency: These systems can process large amounts of blended fabric waste at high industrial conveyor speeds.
    4. Targeting Specific Ratios: Operators can tune the sorter to target specific blended ratios (e.g., >80% polyester) to maximize the value for chemical recycling.
    Limitations
    • Surface-Only Analysis: These sensors can only analyze the top surface, not the inner lining, of a garment.
    • Complex Blends: While better than traditional methods, extremely complex blends (3+ fiber types) or atypical concentrations can still be difficult to sort precisely.
    • Contamination: Wet textiles can interfere with the spectroscopic analysis.
