    1. Set Up: Turn on the bench top polariscope, ensuring the analyzer (top filter) is crossed with the polarizer (bottom filter) until the view is dark.
    2. Test: Place the gemstone on the lower filter (table down for facets, flat side down for cabochons).
    3. Rotate: Rotate the stone
      360∘360 raised to the composed with power
      360∘
       through the top filter and observe the color changes.
      • Singly Refractive (SR): Remains dark throughout (e.g., Diamond, Garnet, Spinel, Glass).
      • Doubly Refractive (DR): Blinks from light to dark four times (

         increments) (e.g., Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald).
      • Aggregate: Remains light throughout rotation (e.g., Chalcedony, Jadeite).
      • Strain/Anomalous Double Refraction (ADR): Glass or single refractive materials may show patchy light/dark areas. 
    Essential Accessories 
    • Conoscope: A small lens that allows the viewer to see Interference Figures (optic axis figures) to determine uniaxial or biaxial optic signs.
    • Light Source: Cold light ensures the heat does not damage the stones being tested. 
    For complex jewelry, a polariscope is frequently used in conjunction with a refractometer for refractive index, a spectroscope for absorption spectra, and a 10x loupe for inspection.
