    MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) gyroscopes
measure angular velocity (rotation rate) by utilizing the Coriolis effect , where vibrating microstructures deflect when rotated . A proof mass is constantly driven into oscillation (drive mode), and upon rotation, this mass experiences a Coriolis force perpendicular to its motion, inducing a secondary oscillation (sense mode) detected as a capacitive or piezoelectric signal.
    Key Working Principles
    • Coriolis Effect : When a mass vibrating in one direction (velocity
      v v
      𝑣
      ) is rotated (angular velocity
      ω omega
      𝜔
), it experiences a perpendicular Coriolis force (
      F c = 2 m ( v × ω ) cap F sub c equals 2 m open paren v cross omega close paren
      𝐹 𝑐 = 2 𝑚 ( 𝑣 × 𝜔 )
      ).
    • Vibrating Structure: Unlike traditional spinning gyros, MEMS devices use micro-machined structures, such as tuning forks, combs, or rings, that oscillate back and forth.
    • Driving & Sensing Modes:
      • Drive Mode: Electrostatic actuators keep the proof mass vibrating at a constant frequency.
      • Sense Mode: When rotation occurs, the Coriolis force causes the mass to vibrate along a perpendicular sensing axis.
    • Signal Detection: Electrodes detect the displacement of the vibrating mass (sensing mode), converting this mechanical movement into a proportional voltage signal.
    • Measurement Output: The magnitude of this voltage change indicates the angular velocity of the device.
    Applications
    • Navigation & Robotics: Used in UAVs, satellites, and autonomous systems for precise orientation.
    • Consumer Electronics: Powering image stabilization in cameras, gaming controllers, and mobile device screen orientation.
    • Automotive: Key component in electronic stability control (ESC) and rollover detection.
MEMS gyroscopes offer, compact, lightweight, and high-precision solutions by integrating sensors, actuators, and signal processing on a single silicon chip.
