    AI Overview
Custom absorbent cores for pads are tailored using materials like bamboo fleece, hemp, Zorb, or cotton for varied absorption needs, ranging from daily liners to heavy postpartum protection. Core performance is measured by GSM (grams per square meter), with higher density materials offering better retention.
Common Custom Core Materials & Techniques
    • Bamboo Fleece/Terry: Highly absorbent, soft, and suitable for heavy flows.
    • Zorb: A highly absorbent synthetic fabric that acts as a superior, thin core material.
    • Hemp Terry/Fleece: Known for durability and holding significant liquid, though it can be denser.
    • Organic Cotton Fleece (HOCF/SHOCF): Provides reliable, natural absorbency for varied flows.
    • Engineered Cores: Commercial and advanced DIY options may incorporate Super Absorbent Polymers (SAP) blended with fluff for maximum retention.
    Designing a Custom Core
    • Light Flow: One layer of cotton terry or flannel.
    • Moderate/Heavy Flow: One to two layers of bamboo fleece or Zorb.
    • Super/Postpartum: Three or more layers of high-absorbency bamboo/Zorb, often with "staggered" or stepped layers for maximum capacity.
    • Structure: Cores can be sewn in a rectangle or contoured to prevent leaks.
When selecting materials, prioritize high GSM for maximum capacity. For a deep dive into material types, check out this fabric breakdown on WordPress.com.
