FAC6A Fire Assay Cupel Size 6A - Almath Crucibles Ltd.
A fire assay cupel is a porous, shallow crucible used in metallurgical assaying to separate precious metals (gold/silver) from base metals like lead, copper, and arsenic. Made commonly of magnesia or bone ash, they absorb molten lead oxide (litharge) at high temperatures ($\sim$1850°F), leaving behind a pure precious metal bead.

What is the cupellation method of fire assay?
Once the sample is removed from the furnace and cools, the lead button is separated from the silicate slag. The precious metals are then extracted by a process known as cupellation. During cupellation, the lead in the button oxidizes and is absorbed into the cupel leaving a precious metal bead known as a prill.

    Is cupellation still used today?
By the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, cupellation was one of the most common processes for refining precious metals. By then, fire assays were used for assaying minerals: testing fresh metals such as lead and recycled metals to determine their purity for jewellery and coin making. Cupellation remains in use.

How does a fire assay work?
Fire assay procedures use a combination of intense heat (1900 °F) that is produced by a furnace, dry reagents called fluxes, and bone ash containers called crucibles and cupels. One uses this combination to fuse the fluxing agents and to isolate the precious metals.Nov 24, 2016
