How To Choose Steel Balls For Ball Mill? | Grinding Balls
The manufacturing process for low chrome mill balls typically involves melting a specific alloy mix, casting the molten metal into ball shapes, and then performing a heat treatment process of quenching and tempering. Key steps include: analyzing and melting the raw materials, molding the molten steel, separating and cleaning the rough balls, and finally, quality control checks and packaging.
    1. Melting and alloying
    • The process begins by sorting scrap metal to create an alloy with the desired hardness and wear resistance, often with a low chromium content of around

and specific levels of other elements like carbon and copper.
    • The sorted scrap is melted in an electric arc furnace until it becomes liquid steel.
    • Alloys are added at a ladle refining station to meet the required specifications.
    2. Casting
    • The liquid steel is poured into molds to create the rough ball shapes.
    • This is often done using automated molding lines, with different sizes of balls sometimes being produced at the same time.
    • The specific casting method and mold material (like sand molds) are used to control the cooling rate and refine the structure of the cast metal.
    3. Separating and cleaning
    • Once the balls have cooled and solidified, they are separated from their molds and any excess material.
    • An automated system can sort the balls by size to prepare for the next stages.
    • The balls are then cleaned to remove any sand or residual materials from the molding process.
    4. Heat treatment
    • This is a crucial step for achieving the required hardness and toughness.
    • The balls are first quenched by rapidly cooling them, often with air and water, to create a hard martensite microstructure.
    • Following quenching, they undergo tempering, where they are reheated to a lower temperature and held for a set time before being allowed to air cool. This step relieves internal stresses and improves the ball's toughness.
    5. Finishing and quality control
    • The balls are then inspected for quality, which can involve both manual checks and automated sensors to ensure uniformity and check for defects.
    • Final finishing processes may include grinding or lapping to achieve precise dimensions.
    • After final quality control, the balls are packaged for shipping.
