    MEMS Accelerometer Gyroscope Magnetometer & Arduino
    Custom MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) accelerometers work by detecting the displacement of a microscopic, suspended "proof mass" relative to fixed, comb-like capacitor plates when subjected to acceleration or gravity . This displacement changes the capacitance between the structures, which is converted into an electrical signal proportional to acceleration magnitude.
    Key Aspects of MEMS Accelerometer Operation:
    • Proof Mass Mechanism: A silicon proof mass is suspended by flexible springs or tethers that allow it to move freely in response to external force (
      F = m a cap F equals m a
      𝐹 = 𝑚 𝑎
      ).
    • Capacitive Sensing: Most MEMS accelerometers use comb-like structures where moving "fingers" attached to the proof mass move between fixed, stationary electrodes.
    • Capacitance Change: Acceleration causes the gap between these capacitor fingers to change (either increasing or decreasing), altering the capacitance value.
    • Signal Processing: The measured capacitance change is processed by an Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) built directly onto or adjacent to the MEMS chip, converting the signal into usable acceleration data.
    • Damping: Squeeze-film gas damping is often used to restrict the movement of the proof mass, protecting it from high-frequency, resonant inputs that could damage the sensor.
    Main Types:
    • Capacitive: The most common, smallest, and cheapest type, using capacitance changes.
    • Piezoelectric: Generates a voltage based on mechanical stress rather than capacitance, ideal for vibration sensing.
    • Thermal: Uses gas, heated by a resistor, to detect acceleration via temperature differences caused by movement.
