How does an everlasting pencil work?
An everlasting pencil works by using a special metal alloy tip, often mixed with a small amount of graphite, that deposits tiny amounts of metal onto the paper as you write. The friction of writing wears down the metal tip incredibly slowly, leaving a visible, pencil-like mark that doesn't smudge and lasts a very long time, even though it is not truly everlasting.

How it works
- Friction and deposition:The tip is made of a special alloy (such as aluminum) and sometimes a bit of graphite, not the traditional clay and graphite mix of a normal pencil.
- Marking the paper:When you press the tip against the paper, a small amount of the metal alloy is scraped off and deposited onto the paper's surface.
- Oxidation:This deposited metal can slightly oxidize over time, causing the mark to become slightly darker or more permanent, much like how a traditional pencil mark can be pressed into paper.
- Durability:Because metal wears down much more slowly than graphite or charcoal, the tip lasts for a very long time—equivalent to hundreds of regular pencils.
- No sharpening needed:The pencil never needs to be sharpened because the tip is designed to wear down so slowly and doesn't break easily.
- No smudging:The metal deposit does not smudge like traditional graphite, making it ideal for artists who use watercolors or other mediums that could be affected by smearing.
