What is pDCPD? Your Questions Answered - Osborne Industries
PDCPD (Polydicyclopentadiene) product molding uses Reaction Injection Molding (RIM), a process where low-viscosity liquid DCPD monomers with catalysts are mixed and injected into a closed mold, polymerizing into a tough, durable thermoset plastic with excellent impact, chemical, and heat resistance, ideal for large, complex parts like heavy-vehicle components and protective covers.
    How it works (RIM Process)
    1. Resin Prep: DCPD monomers are mixed with catalysts (like molybdenum/tungsten) and additives for specific properties (strength, color).
    2. Mold Setup: A low-cost, closed mold is prepared and potentially heated.
    3. Injection: The liquid resin mix is injected under low pressure into the mold cavity.
    4. Curing: Heat triggers polymerization, turning the liquid into a solid thermoset.
    5. Demolding: The part cools and is removed, often with minimal finishing.
    Key advantages of pDCPD
    • High Performance: Great impact, abrasion, and chemical resistance (acids, alkalis).
    • Design Flexibility: Low viscosity allows for intricate details, large parts (even 140+ sq ft), and thin walls.
    • Lightweight: Lighter than metal, improving ergonomics and handling.
    • Cost-Effective: Low-pressure molding uses less expensive molds and offers fast cycles.
    • Surface Finish: Achieves Class-A finishes, ready for painting.
    Common Applications
    • Heavy-duty vehicle parts (grilles, bumpers, fenders).
    • Protective covers and enclosures.
    • Industrial equipment components.
    Key Manufacturers/Providers
    • Osborne Industries, (using RIM/RTM).
    • Romeo RIM (specializes in DCPD RIM).
    • HAPPICH GmbH (uses RIM).
