How to use limit switches?

To use a limit switch, mount it so a moving part of a machine or an object can physically contact its actuator, which in turn mechanically operates an internal electrical switch. The switch has a common terminal and either a normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) terminal. You connect the common terminal to the power supply and either the NO or NC terminal to your controller (like a PLC or microcontroller) to complete a circuit and send a signal when the switch is activated.

How to wire and use a limit switch

This video demonstrates how limit switches are used in practice:

Choose your wiring configuration:
Normally Open (NO): The circuit is open (no connection) until the actuator is pressed. When pressed, it closes the circuit and sends a signal.

Normally Closed (NC): The circuit is closed (connected) until the actuator is pressed. When pressed, it opens the circuit and breaks the connection.

Note: NC is often preferred for safety, as a broken wire or switch failure will also break the circuit, stopping the machine.
Connect the wiring:
Connect the power source's positive terminal to the C (Common) terminal on the limit switch.

Connect the C terminal to the controller's power supply.

Connect the NO or NC terminal to the controller's input terminal.
Mount the switch:
Install the limit switch on your machine or in its path.

Ensure the actuator (the part that moves) will be consistently and reliably engaged by the moving object or machine part at the desired limit of travel.
Test the operation:
Manually or electronically trigger the actuator to ensure the switch is functioning as expected.

When the actuator is engaged, a signal should be sent to the controller, which will then perform a pre-programmed action, such as stopping a motor.
