Have you ever wondered how dirty the top of a soda can that you get from the gas station is? I always did and found a couple of studies on this and the results were shocking! A study called Bacteria on Can Lids was done in 2018 where a group of scientists randomly collected beverage cans from grocery shelves and coolers in gas stations using swabs and found that 46% percent of the lids fell into the dangerously unsanitary range as they were contaminated with bacteria including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Klebsiealla and E coli. Another study in 2022 cultured bacteria from 180 apparent clean can lids from shops and found similar species of bacteria on them. They tested different cleaning methods and found that rinsing with water and wiping with a try tissue removed about 77& of the bacteria, compared to 69% for wiping alone and 47% for rinsing alone.
