The DIY "Packing Paper" Method 
If you do not have commercial odor removal paper, uninked packing paper or plain, crumpled newspaper is a highly effective, low-cost alternative for absorbing odors in smaller leather goods. 
  • How to apply:
    1. Wipe down the leather item lightly with a dry or slightly damp cloth to remove surface residue.
    2. Wrap the leather tightly in multiple layers of clean packing paper or newspaper to form a protective cocoon.
    3. Place the wrapped leather inside an airtight container or a large resealable bag.
    4. Leave it to sit for 3 to 7 days, allowing the highly porous paper fibers to absorb the unwanted scent. 
Sourcing Odor Removal Products 
You can easily find various odor-absorbing sheets, activated charcoal bags, and deodorizers on platforms like Amazon. 
Additional Deodorizing Tips for Leather 
For stubborn or deeply embedded smells, try these supplementary methods: 
  • Baking Soda: Place the leather item into a pillowcase with a small amount of baking soda (or put the soda in an open container inside your leather bag). Seal it and let it sit for 24 hours to draw out smells.
  • Vinegar Wipe: Mix equal parts distilled water and white vinegar. Lightly dampen a soft cloth, wipe down the leather, and immediately wipe with a clean, damp cloth. This neutralizes mildew and cigarette smells.
  • Air Out: Hang the leather in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Avoid direct, harsh sunlight, as it can cause the leather to crack and fade.
