How do I add elastic to my existing waistband?

To add elastic to an existing waistband, first measure the elastic to your waist and join the ends into a loop with a zigzag stitch. Steps

Measure and join elastic:
Wrap the elastic around your waist to determine the correct length. Overlap the ends by about half an inch and sew them together with a zigzag stitch to form a loop.
Mark the elastic:
Fold the elastic loop in half and mark the midpoint. Fold it in half again (into quarters) and mark each quarter point.
Prepare the garment:
Turn the garment inside out. Use a seam ripper to open a section of the waistband seam on the back or one of the side seams, creating an opening to insert the elastic.
Attach the elastic:
Pin the elastic to the inside of the waistband. Align the center front of the elastic with the garment's center front seam, the center back of the elastic with the center back, and the quarter marks with the side seams.
Sew the elastic in place:
Using a zigzag stitch, sew the elastic to the seam allowance of the waistband. Gently stretch the elastic as you sew to gather the fabric evenly.
Finish the waistband:
Fold the waistband down, covering the elastic. Pin it in place, making sure the new elastic is lying flat. Topstitch the bottom edge of the waistband down to the garment, continuing to stretch and flatten the fabric as you go.
Close the opening:
Sew the opening you made in the waistband shut.

No-sew alternative

If you cannot sew, you can also use a no-sew method:

Cut two small slits on the inside of the waistband, about 1/4 inch from the side seams, on either side of the front closure.
Sew two buttons just outside each slit.
Feed the elastic through the waistband, using a safety pin to pull it through.
Cut holes in the elastic at the desired tightness and secure it to the buttons.

This technique is perfect for the #ArdenPants, #DonovanSkirt, or any other pattern with an elastic waistband or cuffs. Even though it's optional, I totally think it's worth the extra effort. 🧵 Topstitching will add stability to your waistbands and keep the elastic from flipping around . . . plus, it just looks so cool! First, you'll start by constructing your waistband as usual. Flatten the elastic and distribute the fabric evenly around the waistband. Place a few pins to keep the fabric distributed as you topstitch—I like 8 pins but it’s up to you! Then, use a regular straight stitch and stretch the elastic until the fabric is flat, making sure to keep it flat while you sew.
