    AI Overview
R1234yf refrigerant for modern Subaru Legacy and other vehicles is
available through specialized automotive retailers, offering, for example, 10 oz cans with gauges and stop-leak at AutoZone or 12-14 oz cans from B'laster and A/C Pro at O'Reilly Auto Parts. These HFO-1234yf products, such as from Honeywell, are designed for systems requiring low global warming potential (GWP) alternatives to R134a.
Key Considerations for R1234yf Supply & Usage:
    • Availability: Retailers like AutoZone and O'Reilly Auto Parts stock R1234yf, with kits often including a 10oz-14oz can, gauge, and hose.
    • Cost: R1234yf is significantly more expensive than R134a, with single, small cans often costing over $80, and professional 10-lb cylinders ranging from $700 to $800+.
    • Compliance: Using non-approved refrigerants (like R134a) in a R1234yf system is illegal under the US EPA Clean Air Act, risking high fines.
    • Safety & Compatibility: R1234yf is mildly flammable (A2L classification). DIY products often include stop-leak and are compatible with standard and electric/hybrid vehicle A/C systems.
    • Equipment: Specialized, non-interchangeable quick-connect fittings are required for R1234yf.
For larger quantities or wholesale, specialized suppliers like Refrigerant Depot provide bulk options.

    Can I use pag 46 in 1234yf?
So even though a given R-1234yf vehicle might use PAG 46, older PAG 46 that is for R-134a systems should not be used. Most manufacturers have indicated that the R-1234yf PAGs are backwards compatible for use with R-134a systems, but the R-134a oils are not forward compatible with R-1234yf systems.Apr 6, 2021

    Can you recharge R-1234yf yourself?

    AI Overview
Yes, you can recharge R-1234yf yourself using DIY kits, but it's crucial to use the correct R-1234yf product (not R-134a), find the right low-side port, and avoid overcharging, as professional service with vacuuming is often better, though DIY kits simplify the process significantly. You'll need a kit with the R-1234yf refrigerant and gauge, wear safety gear, and follow instructions carefully, adding refrigerant in short bursts until the gauge reads in the green zone.
This video provides a visual guide on how to use a DIY R-1234yf recharge kit:

    YouTube · Mar 9, 2021
    Before you start
    • Verify refrigerant type: Check your owner's manual or under the hood for an "R-1234yf" label; using the wrong type (like R-134a) can damage your system.
    • Get the right kit: Purchase an R-1234yf specific recharge kit, as the refrigerant is different.
    • Safety first: Wear gloves and safety goggles, as refrigerant can cause frostbite.
    • Work in a well-ventilated area: Outdoors is best.

    Steps to recharge
    1. Prepare the car:
Start the engine, turn the AC to max, cold, and recirculate.
    2. Locate the port:
Find the low-pressure service port (larger diameter line) and remove its cap.
    3. Connect the gauge:
Attach the quick-connect coupler to the low-side port (it only fits one way).
    4. Check pressure:
See where the gauge reads with the compressor running. If it's low (white zone), recharge; if it's already in the green, you might have a bigger issue, say Reddit users.
    5. Add refrigerant:
Shake the can, attach it to the gauge, and squeeze the trigger in short 10-15 second bursts while shaking the can up and down, alternating positions.
    6. Monitor the gauge:
Release the trigger and check the lowest pressure reading (if the compressor cycles).
    7. Stop in the green:
Continue until the gauge is in the green zone (around 26-50 PSI), but do not overfill, as this harms the system.
    8. Disconnect:
Remove the coupler and replace the cap.
This video demonstrates the process of adding the refrigerant and checking the pressure:

    Important considerations
    • Leaks:
Refrigerant isn't used up; a loss means a leak, which a simple recharge won't fix long-term and a professional can properly diagnose.
    • Professional service:
A full service includes vacuuming the system to remove air and moisture, which is best practice and often requires specialized equipment, note Reddit users and BG Products.
    • Availability:
R-1234yf is available in small cans (under 2 lbs) for DIY purchase without an EPA license, according to Refrigerant Depot and {Link: Tomorrow's Technician https://www.tomorrow
