    zero sequence current transformer
    A zero-phase current transformer (ZCT), or zero-sequence current transformer, detects ground fault currents and electrical leakage in three-phase systems by monitoring the vector sum of all phase currents. Under normal conditions, the sum of currents is zero; when a leakage occurs, the ZCT senses the resulting imbalance, producing a secondary current to trigger protective devices. 
    Key Functions of a Zero-Phase Current Transformer: 
    • Ground Fault Protection: Its primary role is to detect ground faults (both phase-to-ground and leakage) in power systems by measuring the net unbalanced current, commonly used in earth leakage circuit breakers (ELCB) and relays.
    • High Sensitivity Detection: ZCTs are designed to detect very low leakage currents (typically 5mA or 6mA in appliances, up to 30mA in industrial systems), far more accurately than standard transformers.
    • System Monitoring & Safety: It enhances safety in three-phase systems, such as in renewable energy, industrial automation, and power distribution, by immediately detecting insulation failure or unbalanced conditions and signaling a breaker to trip.
    • Wide Application Scope: They are crucial in ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) and residential appliances, as well as high-voltage industrial applications. 
    The main operating principle is based on Kirchhoff’s Current Law, where the transformer core surrounds all phase conductors to directly monitor the sum of currents.
