Laser Marking Plastic | Laser Engraving Plastic | TYKMA Electrox
Nanosecond lasers, especially MOPA fiber lasers, are workhorses for plastic marking, creating contrast by thermally inducing chemical reactions (like white foaming or black charring) or changing color, offering cost-effectiveness and versatility for many plastics like Delrin or PPS, though precise pulse control (20-40ns for white) and sometimes additives are crucial for high-quality, durable results on heat-sensitive or specific polymers.
    How Nanosecond Lasers Mark Plastics:
    1. Thermal Process: Nanosecond pulses deliver enough energy for thermal effects, causing localized heating.
    2. Color Change Mechanisms:
      • Foaming (White Marks): Controlled heating causes surface foaming, creating bright white marks, common on black plastics like Delrin.
      • Carbonization (Black Marks): Intense heat breaks down polymers, creating carbon, resulting in dark marks, though this can be shinier and risk surface cracking if not controlled.
      • Chemical Reactions: The heat triggers chemical reactions in pigmented polymers, changing their color.
    3. Pulse Width Control (MOPA): MOPA (Master Oscillator Power Amplifier) lasers are key because they allow tuning pulse duration (e.g., 20-40 ns for white marks on PPS) and frequency, offering precise control over the thermal impact for different plastics.
    Key Advantages for Plastics:
    • Cost-Effective: Older fiber laser tech remains popular for its low cost.
    • Versatile Colors: Can create black, white, and other colors depending on the plastic and parameters.
    • Fiber Delivery: Compact, stable, and low maintenance.
    Considerations:
    • Plastic Variability: Different plastics (even grades) mark differently; additives may be needed.
    • Heat Management: Overheating from thermal processes can cause damage, requiring careful setting optimization.
    • Wavelength: Standard 1064nm IR lasers work for many, but UV (355nm) or Green (532nm) can improve results on certain materials.
    Best Use Cases:
    • Marking Delrin (acetal) for bright white text.
    • Creating high-contrast marks on glass-filled PPS.
    • General marking on electronics housings and automotive parts.
