Ball Valves - Australian Pipeline Valve
API standard ball valve seals, governed primarily by API 6D (pipeline) and API 608 (industrial), ensure leak-tight performance using soft (PTFE, RPTFE) or metal-to-metal seats, often with spring-loading for bubble-tight shut-off. Key standards include API 607/6FA for fire safety, ensuring seal integrity during fires, and API 622/624/ISO 15848 for low-fugitive emissions.
Key API Ball Valve Seal Standards & Types
    • API 6D (Pipeline Valves): Specifies design, testing, and sealing for high-pressure, long-distance pipelines, often using trunnion-mounted designs for bidirectional sealing.
    • API 608 (Metal Ball Valves): Covers flanged, threaded, and welded-end metal ball valves for general industrial applications.
    • API 607/6FA (Fire Test): Defines requirements for soft-seated quarter-turn valves to maintain a seal during and after fire exposure.
    • API 598 (Valve Inspection): Details testing standards for seat, shell, and back-seat leakage.
    Seal Design and Materials
    • Seat Materials: Soft seats (PTFE, RPTFE, PEEK) for general service; metal seats (hard-faced) for severe service, high temperatures, or erosive media.
    • Trunnion Mounted Seal: Uses spring-loaded seat seals, allowing for independent movement to maintain a bubble-tight seal even under low pressure.
    • Secondary Sealant System: Many API 6D valves include emergency seat sealant injection points to provide temporary sealing if the primary seal is damaged.
    • Stem Packing: Utilizes PTFE or flexible graphite to meet strict fugitive emission requirements, often with energized, live-loaded, or spring-loaded Packing to compensate for wear.
    Common API Sealing Applications
    • Cryogenic Service: Spring-energized seals designed to maintain integrity at extremely low temperatures.
    • High Pressure/Temperature: Metal-to-metal seating ensures performance in harsh environments, often meeting NACE MR0175 standards for corrosion resistance.
    • Double Block and Bleed (DBB): Specialized seating (often 6D) allows for venting of the cavity between seats to ensure no leakage, providing higher security.

What is the difference between API 598 and API 607?
API 598 – Covers testing and inspection for gate, globe, ball, and check valves. It defines hydrostatic shell, seat, and backseat tests, specifying maximum allowable leakage rates. API 607 – Focuses on fire testing for soft-seated quarter-turn valves to ensure operation after exposure to flame and heat.Nov 3, 2025

What is the difference between API 600 and API 602?
Materials of Construction. API 600 valves are often cast from materials like WCB (carbon steel), WC9 (chromium-molybdenum alloy steel), and CF8M (stainless steel). API 602 valves typically use forged equivalents such as A105 (carbon steel), F22 (low alloy steel), and F316 (stainless steel).

What is the difference between API 598 and API 609?
API 609 is a specification for butterfly valves with lug-type and wafer-type configurations designed for installation between ANSI B16 flanges, 150 to 1500 class. API 598 covers the testing and inspection requirements for check, gate, globe, ball, plug & butterfly valves.
