Greenhouse Tomato Production - Alabama Cooperative Extension ...
Bag culture is a popular, soilless greenhouse tomato production system using plastic bags filled with substrates like perlite, rockwool, or pine bark. It provides a clean, controlled environment that reduces soil-borne diseases. Typically, 2–3 tomato plants are grown per lay-flat bag, spaced about 16–18 inches apart, and trained vertically on strings. The system works best with drip irrigation and requires regular fertigation.
    Key Components and Procedures
    • Growing Medium: Commonly used substrates include perlite, pine bark, or peat-based mixes, with 4-cubic-foot bags being standard for large-scale operations.
    • Bag Arrangement: Bags are usually laid flat on the greenhouse floor, often in double rows (e.g., 1.5 ft apart) with walkways of 3 feet between pairs.
    • Planting: Transplants are typically started in small cubes (rockwool or peat) and placed onto the bags, which have pre-cut holes and slits for drainage.
    • Irrigation and Nutrition: A controlled drip irrigation system is necessary, with nutrients added through water (fertigation) to ensure optimal uptake. The Electrical Conductivity (EC) should be monitored daily and maintained around 2.5.
    • Trellising: Plants are pruned to a single stem and supported with string (polypropylene or plastic) attached to overhead wires, often trained using a V-training system for improved light interception.
    • Harvesting: Depending on the variety and conditions, harvesting usually starts 6–8 weeks after planting.
    Advantages and Management
    • Disease Management: Because the medium is soilless, it avoids soil-borne pathogens and allows for precise management of water and nutrients.
    • Efficiency: Allows for high-density planting while providing improved drainage compared to soil culture.
    • Maintenance: Substrates may need to be replaced periodically (some materials can be reused), and drainage should be monitored to prevent waterlogging.
    • Yields: In optimal conditions, bag culture can lead to high yields of high-quality greenhouse tomatoes, with potential for significant annual revenue, though setup costs and management intensity are high.
