    Key Steps in Core Formation 
    1. Electrode & Cell Assembly: Active materials (like graphite for anode, metal oxides for cathode) are mixed, coated onto foils, dried, compressed (calendering), cut, and assembled with a separator, then sealed in a pouch with electrolyte.
    2. Wetting & Initialization: The cell rests to allow the electrolyte to fully penetrate the porous electrodes (wetting), preparing for electrochemical reactions.
    3. SEI Formation (First Charge): A slow, controlled first charge (often at low current, e.g., C/10 or C/20) prompts lithium ions to intercalate into the anode, reacting with the electrolyte to form the crucial SEI layer.
    4. CEI Formation (High Potential): A similar, though less studied, layer (Cathode Electrolyte Interphase - CEI) forms at the cathode at high potentials.
    5. Activation Cycles: Multiple subsequent charge/discharge cycles (formation cycles) further stabilize these interphase layers, activating the materials and ensuring uniform performance.
    6. Grading: After formation, cells undergo grading to classify them by capacity and performance, ensuring consistency.

    • Stabilizes SEI: Prevents irreversible consumption of lithium and electrolyte, crucial for long cycle life.
    • Activates Materials: Unlocks the full electrochemical potential of the electrode materials.
    • Ensures Safety & Performance: A well-formed SEI prevents dendrite formation and short circuits, improving safety and capacity retention.
