High Efficiency Flooded Evaporator Ground Source Heat Pump ...
A flooded type heat pump is a high-efficiency HVAC system utilizing a "flooded evaporator," where heat exchanger tubes are fully submerged in liquid refrigerant. This design offers 15–25% higher efficiency than dry-expansion (DX) systems, commonly used in large industrial/commercial water-cooled or ground-source screw compressor units for superior heat transfer.
    Key Features & Advantages
    • High Efficiency & Performance: By keeping the heat exchange surface constantly wet, the heat transfer coefficient is significantly improved compared to traditional dry-expansion systems.
    • Optimal for Large Loads: Ideal for large water-to-water heat pumps, industrial water-cooled chillers, and large ground-source systems, often using Hstars' shell and tube flooded evaporators or Trane CVH models.
    • Reliability: The evaporator maintains a constant liquid level via a float valve, with an accumulator ensuring only vapor reaches the compressor, preventing liquid slugging.
    • Heat Recovery: Many flooded units offer heat recovery, allowing 30% to 100% heat reclaiming in cooling mode for hot water supply, often increasing unit efficiency further.
    Working Mechanism
    1. Evaporation: The refrigerant fills the shell side, submerging the tubes containing water.
    2. Heat Transfer: Heat from the water (inside the tubes) boils the surrounding liquid refrigerant.
    3. Vapor Separation: The generated vapor is separated from the liquid and sent to the compressor. The large surface contact maximizes heat exchange efficiency.

What are the disadvantages of flooded evaporators?
    * Several disadvantages of the flooded evaporator in comparison to the direct expansion evaporator are : - the first cost is higher . - more refrigerant is needed to fill the evaporator and surge drum . - oil is likely to accumulate in the surge drum and evaporator and must be periodically or continuously removed .Nov 9, 2025

What is the difference between dry and flooded evaporator?
Answer. Evaporator is said to be flooded type if liquid refrigerant covers the entire heat transfer surface. This type ofevaporator uses a float type of expansion valve. An evaporator is called dry type when a portion of theevaporator is used for superheating the refrigerant vapour after its evaporation.Dec 20, 2017

What is a flooded heat exchanger?
Flooded heat exchangers are often used in industry to reduce the required heat-transfer area and the size of utility control valves. These units involve a condensing vapor on the hot side that accumulates as a liquid phase in the lower part of the vessel.
