    AI Overview
WS-3 and WS-23 are synthetic, non-menthol, food-grade cooling agents used in artificial flavors to create a cold, refreshing sensation without the strong herbal taste of menthol. They are widely used in confectionery, beverages, vaping products (e-liquids), tobacco, and oral care products.
    Key Differences:
    • WS-3 (N-Ethyl-2-(isopropyl)-5-methylcyclohexanecarboxamide): Provides a sharp, immediate, and long-lasting cooling effect, primarily at the back of the mouth/throat, with a slight, clean minty scent.
    • WS-23 (2-Isopropyl-N,2,3-trimethylbutyramide): Known for a "round" or "fast" cooling effect with almost zero odor or taste, often preferred for a pure icy sensation rather than a minty one.
    Characteristics of Cooling Agents:
    • Usage: They are frequently used in "ice-hybrid" products (e.g., fruit flavors with "ice" or "koolada" labeling).
    • Heat Resistance: Both agents, particularly WS-23, are heat-stable up to 200°C, making them suitable for baked goods and high-heat production processes.
    • Form: Usually supplied as white crystals or powder, often pre-diluted in propylene glycol (PG) for easy mixing in liquid applications.
    • Appearance in Products: Used in chewing gum, candies, beverages, toothpaste, and recently, significantly increased in popular disposable e-cigarettes like Puffbar.
    Safety and Regulation:
    • WS-3 and WS-23 are regulated by the FDA as food additives.
    • However, their safety when inhaled in e-liquids is not established, with some studies indicating they are used at levels higher than suggested guidelines in certain products.

    What is WS-23 made of?
WS-23 (methyl diisopropyl propionamide, 2-isopropyl-N,2,3-trimethylbutanamide) is a chemical compound which acts as an activator (opener) of the so-called "menthol receptor", the TRPM8 calcium channel, though with relatively low affinity and it may also act at other targets.
