    • Anomalous Double Refraction (ADR): Detects strain patterns, such as "snake bands" in glass and synthetic materials, indicating that a seemingly singly refractive stone is under stress.
    • Polycrystalline Aggregates: Identifies stones that remain light throughout 360-degree rotation, such as jadeite and nephrite.
    • Pleochroism Detection: Allows for the identification of color changes, particularly in colored stones. 
    How to Use a Gem Polariscope 
    1. Place the Stone: Set the gem on the glass stage between the two filters (polarizer and analyzer).
    2. Rotate: Rotate the stone 360 degrees, noting when it appears light or dark, which reveals its refractive character.
    3. Check for "Blinking": If the stone turns light and dark four times during a full rotation, it is likely doubly refractive.
    4. Use a Conoscope: Use a small glass sphere to view optic interference figures for more advanced identification, such as distinguishing uniaxial from biaxial stones. 
    For more precise identification, these are often used in conjunction with a gem refractometer.
