Veterinary cortisol testing in pets evaluates adrenal gland function to diagnose disorders like Cushing's syndrome (high cortisol) or Addison's disease (low cortisol). Symptoms include increased thirst, urination, appetite, and hair loss (dogs) or skin fragility (cats). Diagnostic tests, such as ACTH stimulation or low-dose dexamethasone suppression, are standard.
    Cortisol Disorders in Pets
    • Cushing's Syndrome (Hyperadrenocorticism): Overproduction of cortisol, often caused by pituitary or adrenal tumors.
      • Common signs (Dogs): Pot-belly, alopecia (hair loss), excessive panting, muscle weakness.
      • Common signs (Cats): Often concurrent with diabetes mellitus and extreme skin fragility.
    • Addison's Disease (Hypoadrenocorticism): Underproduction of cortisol, causing lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea.
    Diagnostic Testing
Veterinarians use blood tests to measure cortisol levels under specific conditions:
    • ACTH Stimulation Test: The preferred test for diagnosing Addison’s and monitoring Cushing's treatment.
    • Low-Dose Dexamethasone Suppression (LDDS) Test: Often used to confirm Cushing's disease.
    • Urine Cortisol/Creatinine Ratio: A screening tool used to rule out Cushing's if results are normal.
    Treatment Overview
    • Cushing's Management: Medication like Trilostane is used to control cortisol production, though it rarely cures the underlying tumor.
    • Addison's Treatment: Lifelong medication, such as desoxycorticosterone pivalate (DOCP) or fludrocortisone, is required.
Disclaimer: If your pet exhibits these symptoms, consult a veterinarian for testing, as high cortisol can be caused by stress or other diseases.
