- Converts energy:It converts electrical energy into mechanical energy (sound waves) and then back into electrical energy (echo signals).
- Generates images:The electrical signals are sent to the ultrasound machine, which uses the time it takes for echoes to return to calculate distances and generate a real-time image of the internal anatomy.
How it works
- Piezoelectric effect:The active element in most transducers is a piezoelectric crystal (often made of PZT).
- Transmission:When an electric field is applied, the crystal vibrates, producing high-frequency sound waves.
- Reception:When the sound waves (echoes) return and hit the crystal, they cause it to vibrate, which generates an electrical signal.
- Frequency and depth:The thickness of the crystal determines the frequency; thinner crystals are for higher frequencies (superficial structures), while thicker ones are for lower frequencies (deeper structures).
