Class B Amplifier and the Class-B Transistor Amplifier
A push-pull amplifier module is a circuit using a complementary pair of active devices (transistors or tubes) to alternately "push" (source) and "pull" (sink) current to a load. It boosts efficiency and power output compared to single-ended designs by cancelling even-order harmonics and DC current in the output. Common in audio (Class B/AB) and RF amplifiers, these modules minimize distortion.

How does a push-pull transistor amplifier work [circuit simulator]
    Georg Schett
    YouTube• Nov 19, 2025
    Key Features and Principles
    • Active Device Pair: Typically uses complementary pairs (e.g., NPN/PNP transistors or NMOS/PMOS MOSFETs) to handle positive and negative signal halves.
    • Efficiency: More efficient than single-ended Class-A amplifiers, with power dissipation reaching maximum at peak signal output.
    • Reduced Distortion: Symmetrical construction helps cancel out even-order harmonics.
    • Transformerless or Coupled: Can be designed with input/output transformers (often in older or high-power RF, according to) or transformerless (often in modern electronics,).
    Applications
    • Audio Amplification: Power amplifiers, high-fidelity audio equipment.
    • RF Amplification: Transmitters and signal generators.
    • Power Conversion: DC-to-AC inverters.
    Common Configurations
    • Class B: Each device conducts for only half of the cycle, creating high efficiency but potential crossover distortion.
    • Class AB: Devices are biased slightly on to reduce crossover distortion, commonly used for high-quality audio.
    • Complementary Pair (Push-Pull Output): Frequently used in TTL and CMOS digital logic circuits to improve switching speed.
