    AI Overview
Fiber Optic Gyroscope (FOG) Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) are
high-performance sensors using optical fiber coils to measure angular velocity and acceleration with exceptional precision, low noise, and high stability . Ideal for navigation and stabilization in demanding environments, they offer superior performance over MEMS, despite being larger, heavier, and more costly.
Key Aspects of FOG IMU Technology
    • Operating Principle: FOGs operate on the Sagnac effect, using counter-propagating light beams in a coiled optical fiber to detect rotation. As light takes slightly different times to traverse the fiber in opposing directions, a phase shift occurs, measuring the rotation rate with high accuracy.
    • Performance Benefits:
      • High Accuracy/Low Drift: Superior for long-term dead reckoning and scenarios with GNSS outages.
      • Low Noise: FOGs have lower Angle Random Walk (ARW) compared to MEMS.
      • Vibration Resistance: The lack of moving parts makes them rugged for high-shock, high-vibration environments.
      • Fast North Finding: Capable of determining orientation within minutes, even while moving.
    • Components: A typical system includes three FOG gyros and three accelerometers (often quartz flexure) for six-degree-of-freedom sensing (3-axis angular, 3-axis linear acceleration).
    • Applications:
      • Defense/Aerospace: UAV navigation , satellite antenna pointing , and missile guidance.
      • Marine/Land: Submarine/underwater robot navigation (ROV/AUV), mining, and tunnel boring machine (TBM) control.
      • Stabilization: Gimbals and EOC/IR systems .
    • FOG vs. MEMS/RLG: FOGs fill the gap between low-cost MEMS and high-end Ring Laser Gyros (RLG). While superior to MEMS, they are generally larger and more expensive.
Modern advancements, such as Exail's UmiX series , are focusing on reducing the size and power consumption of FOG IMUs while increasing performance.
