Porcelain Crucibles, Porcelain Crucible with lids or without ...
A porcelain crucible is a heat-resistant, glazed ceramic container used to heat solid chemicals, metals, or organic samples to high temperatures (
    1000∘
    C
    –
    1050∘
    C
) for drying, melting, or combustion (ashing). Paired with a lid to prevent material loss, they are standard for gravimetric analysis and are resistant to acid.
    Key Uses in Chemistry:
    • Gravimetric Analysis: Heating precipitates to a constant mass to determine the composition of a substance.
    • Calcination: Heating substances (like metal ores) to high temperatures to induce thermal decomposition or remove volatile components.
    • Ashing Samples: Burning off organic material to leave behind inorganic, non-combustible ash.
    • Melting Substances: Melting metals or salts.
    Important Safety & Techniques:
    • Support: Use a pipe stem triangle (clay triangle) on a ring stand to hold the crucible over a Bunsen burner.
    • Heating: Heat gradually to avoid cracking due to thermal shock.
    • Handling: Use crucible tongs for hot crucibles; do not handle with bare hands or test tube holders.
    • Cooling: Allow the crucible to cool slightly before moving it to a desiccator to avoid shattering from rapid temperature changes.
    • Cleaning: Wash with lab water only, ensuring the lid and crucible are dry before reuse.
    Limitations:
    • Chemical Compatibility: Not recommended for use with high concentrations of alkali salts or hydrofluoric acid.
    • Fragility: While heat resistant, porcelain is fragile and can crack if cooled too quickly.
