What is the maximum voltage for a surge protector?
A surge protector's "max voltage" is a bit of a misnomer; the key rating is its clamping voltage (also called UL Voltage Protection Rating or VPR), which is the maximum voltage it allows through before it starts to shunt the excess to ground. A lower clamping voltage is better, with the ideal rating being 330V or less, and a good surge protector should have a clamping voltage no higher than 400V.
Understanding voltage ratings
- Clamping Voltage (or VPR):This is the most important voltage rating to consider.
- It's the highest voltage that a surge protector will allow to pass through to your connected equipment before its internal components, like Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs), activate to block the excess.
- The lower the clamping voltage, the better the protection. The lowest rating available is 330V, and a rating of 400V is considered the maximum acceptable for a good protector.
- Normal operating voltage:This is the standard voltage in your home, typically around 120V in the United States. Surge protectors are designed to handle spikes that go above this normal voltage.
Other important ratings
- Joule Rating:This indicates how much energy the surge protector can absorb over its lifetime before it fails. A higher joule rating is generally better, as it can absorb more energy before failing, which is especially important in areas with frequent surges.
- Response Time:This is how quickly the surge protector reacts to a surge. A faster response time (measured in nanoseconds) is better, with 1 nanosecond or less being ideal.
- Amperage:This measures the amount of current the protector can handle. Look for a surge protector with a circuit breaker that will trip if the total amperage of the connected devices is too high to prevent overheating.
