    The ICI Pilling Tester (or ICI Pilling Box) is a laboratory instrument used to determine the resistance of fabrics (woven and knitted) to pilling, snagging, and surface fuzzing. Samples are mounted on rubber tubes and tumbled randomly inside cork-lined boxes, simulating daily wear to assess fiber entanglement.

    Key Features and Standards 
    • Methodology: Samples are stitched into tubes, placed inside boxes lined with specialized cork, and rotated (often 7,200 to 14,400 revolutions)
      .
    • Standards Complied: ISO 12945-1, GB/T 4802.3, BS 5811, IWS TM152, JIS L1076.
    • Capacity: Typically available in 2, 4, or 9-box configurations, often with magnetic-backed cork liners for easy replacement.
    • Application: Ideal for wool, knitted, and woven fabrics subjected to low-pressure friction. 
    Typical Testing Procedure 
    1. Sample Prep: Cut 125x125mm samples, stitch them to create tubes, and place them on rubber tubes.
    2. Tumbling: Rotate the box (standard speed is roughly 47.5 rpm).
    3. Grading: Remove samples and compare against standard photos to assign a pilling grade (1-5, with 1 being worst and 5 best).

    How is a fabric tested for pilling? The test determines how resistant fabrics are to pilling. The same machine is used to test for pilling as for the Martindale abrasion test. Instead of the test fabric being rubbed against a standard abradant, it is rubbed against another piece of the same fabric.
