Full article: Advances in self-crosslinking of acrylic ...
A self-crosslinking acrylate copolymer emulsion is a water-based polymer dispersion where individual acrylic chains chemically bond (crosslink) during drying, forming a tough, durable, water-resistant 3D network without needing external additives, used in high-performance coatings for wood, concrete, textiles, and metals for excellent hardness, adhesion, and chemical resistance.
    How it Works (Self-Crosslinking)
    • Emulsion Base: Acrylic monomers (like acrylates and methacrylates) are polymerized in water to form tiny polymer particles (emulsion).
    • Reactive Monomers: Special functional monomers (e.g., those containing hydroxyl or carboxyl groups) are incorporated into the polymer chains.
    • Network Formation: When the water evaporates, these functional groups on different polymer chains react with each other (or sometimes with themselves), forming strong covalent bonds (crosslinks) that create a rigid, interconnected structure, unlike traditional linear polymers.
    Key Properties
    • Durability: Hardness, strength, abrasion resistance, and block resistance.
    • Water/Chemical Resistance: Excellent water repellency, resistance to detergents, chemicals, and stains.
    • Adhesion: Strong bonding to various substrates like wood, metal, and plastics.
    • Non-Yellowing/Aging: Superior long-term performance and stability.
    Common Applications
    • Coatings: Wood floor finishes, primers, exterior paints, concrete sealers, and automotive paints.
    • Textiles: Fabric bonding, backing, and finishing for a firm or soft handle.
    • Adhesives: High-strength, moisture-resistant glues for lamination.
    Examples of Products/Types
    • Pure acrylic or vinyl-acrylic copolymers.
    • Silicone-modified versions for enhanced water repellency.
    • Styrene-acrylics for improved alkali resistance in building coatings.
