    AI Overview
PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) insulated wires and cables are high-performance electrical conductors designed for extremely harsh environments, particularly in the nuclear power industry. Known as a "tip of the pyramid" material in the plastics industry, PEEK offers exceptional radiation resistance, high-temperature tolerance, and superior mechanical strength, making it ideal for nuclear island drive mechanisms and critical control wiring.
Key Features of PEEK Nuclear Cables
    • Radiation Resistance: PEEK cables are capable of maintaining structural and electrical integrity under high-dose radiation environments, such as those found in nuclear reactors.
    • High Temperature Performance: These cables can withstand continuous operating temperatures of up to 250°C (482°F), with short-term tolerance reaching 300°C, making them suitable for high-heat zones.
    • Chemical & Environmental Resistance: They resist corrosion from acids, alkalis, and solvents, and are highly resistant to water absorption (hydrolysis), performing well in steam or underwater conditions.
    • Halogen-Free Flame Retardant: PEEK is inherently flame retardant, providing low-smoke, halogen-free protection to prevent the release of toxic gases in the event of fire.
    • Long-Term Durability: Studies indicate a high expected service life, with some projections exceeding 30 years in specific applications, reducing the need for frequent replacements and decreasing overall costs.
    Applications in Nuclear Power
    • Nuclear Island Drive Mechanisms: Used as winding wires and connecting cables for drive mechanisms that must function safely under, continuous irradiation.
    • Control & Instrumentation: Employed in reactor control systems where signal integrity must not be degraded by radiation or heat.
    • Radiation-Resistant Sensors: Used in RTD sensor cables (Resistance Temperature Detectors) that require high reliability in high-temperature, high-radiation areas.
    • Particle Accelerators: Used in high-energy physics applications (e.g., CERN) where radiation levels can reach 10 MGy.
    PEEK vs. Conventional Cables
While PEEK cables are typically 3-5 times more expensive than traditional cables, they are considered cost-effective in nuclear applications because they eliminate the need for frequent maintenance and replacement in restricted access areas. They are often used as an alternative to polyimide or rubber insulation when superior chemical and radiation resistance is required.
    Common Configurations:
    • Single-core or multi-core configurations.
    • Shielded and unshielded, such as AKPK250 (600V, 250°C) PEEK cable.
    • Available in sizes ranging from 1/0AWG to #46 AWG.
