What is a Hybrid Circuit Board? - RayPCB
A hybrid PCB combines different materials—most commonly high-frequency laminates (e.g., Rogers) with standard, lower-cost materials (e.g., FR-4)—in a single multilayer board. This design offers a cost-effective solution for high-frequency, high-performance applications, allowing specialized materials on signal layers while using, for example, cheaper FR-4 for thermal management or structural support.
    Key Aspects of Hybrid PCBs
    • Material Combination: Common hybrids combine high-frequency, low-loss materials (Rogers/PTFE) with FR-4, or rigid materials with flexible substrates (Rigid-Flex).
    • Performance Benefits: These boards enable high-speed signal integrity and low dielectric loss in RF sections, while optimizing thermal management in high-power areas.
    • Applications: Commonly used in high-frequency applications like 5G communication, radar systems, satellite communications, automotive electronics, and aerospace systems.
    • Manufacturing Considerations: Design requires matching the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) to prevent delamination during fabrication. Specialized drilling is often needed due to the differing characteristics of the mixed materials.
    Advantages
    • Reduced Cost: By limiting expensive high-frequency laminates to specific layers, costs are reduced compared to pure high-frequency boards.
    • Space Saving: Eliminates the need for separate boards for RF and digital circuits, allowing for smaller, more compact designs.
    • Improved Signal Integrity: Ensures high performance on critical signals without using expensive, high-loss materials throughout the entire board.
    Common Material Pairings
    • Rogers/PTFE & FR-4: The most common mix for RF-power, high-performance circuits.
    • Ceramic & FR-4: Used for higher thermal conductivity in challenging environments.
    • Metal Core (Aluminum) & FR-4: Used for enhanced heat dissipation.
Hybrid PCBs are designed to meet specific electrical, thermal, and mechanical needs, providing specialized, cost-effective, and robust solutions for advanced electronic devices.

What is the 3W 3H rule?
A common rule of thumb for many PCB manufacturers is to adopt the 3W (three-width, also sometimes referred to as the three-height or 3H rule) that establishes a relationship between the current-carrying capacity of the trace and the distance to the nearest trace.
