How a Relay Works and How to Use It in Circuits
An electromechanical relay uses an electromagnetic coil to physically move an armature, which in turn opens or closes an electrical circuit . When a low-power control signal energizes the coil, a magnetic field is created. This field pulls the armature, causing the contacts to move and complete a separate, high-power circuit, while a spring returns the armature to its original position when the control signal is removed.
This video explains how an electromechanical relay works with a 3D animation:

    How it works
    • Energizing the coil: A low-power control signal is sent to the relay's coil.
    • Magnetic field: The current flowing through the coil creates a magnetic field, similar to an electromagnet.
    • Armature movement: This magnetic field attracts a metal armature.
    • Switching the contacts: The movement of the armature causes the relay's contacts to change position. In a normally open (NO) configuration, this movement closes the contacts, completing the high-power circuit and allowing current to flow to a load.
    • De-energizing the coil: When the control signal is removed, the magnetic field disappears.
    • Spring action: A spring pulls the armature back to its original position, which opens the contacts and breaks the high-power circuit. This process is electrically isolating, meaning the low-power control circuit is physically separated from the high-power load circuit.

What are the components of an electromechanical relay?
    Relay - Wikipedia
A simple electromagnetic relay consists of a coil of wire wrapped around a soft iron core (a solenoid), an iron yoke which provides a low reluctance path for magnetic flux, a movable iron armature, and one or more sets of contacts (there are two contacts in the relay pictured).
