    • Durability: MgF2 is a very hard, robust material resistant to mechanical/thermal shock and chemical etching. BaF2 is softer and more sensitive to thermal shock.
    • Birefringence: MgF2 is birefringent, which may require optical axis alignment, while BaF2 is not.
    • Solubility: BaF2 is more soluble than MgF2, making it less ideal for high-moisture environments. 
    Applications 
    • MgF2 Windows: Used in excimer laser systems, deep-UV (DUV) imaging, hydrogen Lyman-alpha line applications, and as vacuum windows.
    • BaF2 Windows: Commonly used in FT-IR spectroscopy, infrared radiation pyrometers, and scintillators due to high radiation resistance. 
    Common configurations for both include 5-75mm diameters, with custom shapes (rectangular, wedged) available for specific, high-precision UV or IR applications.
