To remove the center pin on a leaf spring, first secure the spring pack with clamps to keep it from separating after the U-bolts are removed. Then, use a socket and wrench to remove the nut from the center bolt, followed by using a punch and hammer or a press to drive the pin out from the opposite side. If the pin is rusted or stuck, use a penetrating oil, heat, or a combination of methods to loosen it.

Prepare the vehicle:
Safely lift and support the vehicle. Release any pressure on the leaf springs.
Secure the leaf spring:
Clamp the leaf spring pack together tightly on both sides of the center bolt to prevent the leaves from separating once the U-bolts are removed.
Remove U-bolts and plate:
Disconnect the U-bolts and the bottom plate that holds the spring pack to the axle.
Remove the center pin nut:
Use a socket and wrench to loosen and remove the nut from the center bolt. If the bolt starts to spin, use a separate tool to hold the pin in place while you remove the nut.
Drive out the pin:
Align a punch that is slightly smaller than the pin's diameter with the pin's end.

Use a hammer or press to drive the pin out from the opposite side.

Note: If the pin is stuck, apply penetrating oil, heat the bolt (and allow it to cool before proceeding), or drill into it. For a rusted or seized bolt, driving it out with a hammer and punch is often the first approach.
Replace the pin:
After removing the old pin, insert the new one through the hole. Tighten it with a wrench or socket, being careful not to overtighten, especially on smaller bolts.

Penetrating oil:
Soak the area around the pin with a penetrating lubricant to help break the rust and corrosion.
Heat:
Apply heat to the area around the pin. Be aware that heat can damage nearby components, and you may need to let it cool before attempting to remove it.
Drilling:
If the pin is completely seized, you may need to drill it out. Using a carbide-tipped drill bit can help cut through the hardened steel.

To determine leaf spring size, measure the length along the curve from the center of each eye to the center bolt, and then measure the "arch" from the top of the main leaf at the center bolt to a line drawn between the centers of the two eyes. Other important measurements include the width of the spring pack, the number of leaves, and the capacity, which can sometimes be found on a vehicle's data plate or the axle itself.

How to measure the length and arch

Length:
Measure the spring along its curve from the center of the front eye to the center bolt, and then from the center bolt to the center of the rear eye. The total length is the sum of these two measurements.
Arch:
Draw a straight line or use a straight edge to connect the center of the front eye and the center of the rear eye.
Measure the distance from the top of the main leaf at the center bolt straight down to this imaginary line.

Width:
Measure the width across the top leaf of the spring pack.
Number of leaves:
Count the number of leaves in the spring pack, starting with the main leaf as one.
Capacity:
Determine the weight capacity rating, which can often be found on a sticker on the vehicle or trailer frame, or by the diameter of the axle itself.
Eye diameter:
Measure the diameter of the eye-holes where the spring bolts attach to the vehicle.
