    AI Overview
Using Fiber Optic Gyroscope (FOG) Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) in navigation systems offers superior precision, long-term stability, and high robustness in harsh environments compared to traditional MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensors. FOG-based systems are ideal for high-stakes, GNSS-denied applications such as defense, subsea, and aerospace navigation.
Key advantages of using FOG IMU in navigation systems include:
    • Superior Accuracy and Low Drift: FOG IMUs provide very low bias instability and low angle random walk, resulting in minimal positioning drift over time—often an order of magnitude better than MEMS IMUs. They can maintain high accuracy for hours without external GNSS corrections.
    • High Robustness in Harsh Environments: Due to their solid-state design with no moving parts, FOGs are highly resistant to mechanical shock, vibration, and thermal drift. This makes them suitable for demanding environments like mining, high-speed military vehicles, and aerospace, where MEMS sensors might experience resonance failures.
    • Accurate North-Seeking Capability: Advanced FOGs can detect the Earth's angular rotation rate to determine true north (gyrocompass heading) within minutes, even while moving. This is crucial for applications that cannot rely on magnetic compasses.
    • Immunity to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI): As they utilize light beams through optical fiber (Sagnac effect) rather than magnetic materials or electrical fields, FOGs are non-magnetic and highly resistant to EMI, making them ideal for military electronic warfare scenarios.
    • Reliability and Long Life: With no wearing parts, FOGs offer high reliability and long operating lifetimes, which are essential for commercial aviation and long-term strategic equipment.
    • Fast Start-up and Response: FOGs offer near-instantaneous startup and high-speed dynamic response suitable for complex motion scenarios, such as in missiles or stabilized antenna platforms.
    Comparison to Other Technologies
While MEMS are better for cost, size, and power (CSWaP), and Ring Laser Gyros (RLGs) are used for ultra-high-end applications, FOGs serve as the best, high-performance alternative for environments requiring high precision in a rugged, manageable package.

What are the disadvantages of ring laser gyroscope?
One of the shortcomings of compact ring lasers is the phenomenon of mode locking at low rotation rates. There is a minimum angular velocity below which the clockwise and anticlockwise modes simply lock together, causing zero frequency difference in the output.

What is the difference between FOG and RLG?
While the RLG is insensitive to e.g. temperature changes and vibrations they have the capability to provide very high performance at a small form factor. The FOG in contrast is sensitive to temperature and vibrations but can be more cost effective.
