    Armor Configurations & Performance 
    • Strike Face: Alumina plates act as the primary, outermost strike face to break up ammunition.
    • Backing Material: They are almost always bonded to a composite backing, such as Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) or aramid (Kevlar), to capture fragments and absorb residual energy.
    • Tile Design: To improve multi-hit capabilities, many plates use a "mosaic" layout, where smaller alumina tiles are arranged on the backing to localize damage from impacts.
    • Weight & Thickness: Typical 10x12 NIJ Level IV alumina plates often weigh between 5–8 lbs per plate and are approximately 1.1 inches thick. 
    Advantages and Limitations 
    • Advantages: Excellent cost-to-performance ratio, high chemical stability, and high environmental resistance.
    • Limitations: Lower fracture toughness than advanced ceramics, and greater weight compared to SiC/B4C alternatives. 
    For cost-sensitive applications that still require high-level protection, such as police, military, or civilian armor, alumina is often preferred for its reliability.
