    ECP Therapy - ACS Diagnostics
Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) cuffs are non-invasive, pneumatic, blood-pressure-like sleeves placed on the calves, thighs, and buttocks, used to treat chronic angina, heart failure, and improve blood circulation. They inflate and deflate in sync with the heart's diastolic phase to increase blood flow to the heart and reduce cardiac workload.
Key Features of EECP Cuff Systems
    • Components: The system includes three sets of inflatable cuffs (calves, lower thighs, upper thighs), air hoses, a pressure regulator, and a central console.
    • Mechanism: Cuffs inflate sequentially from the calves up to the buttocks during diastole (when the heart rests), pushing blood toward the heart, and deflate immediately before systole (when the heart pumps).
    • Synchronization: The inflation/deflation is synchronized with the patient’s heartbeat using an electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor, typically The University of Michigan Health.
    • Treatment Plan: A typical, FDA-approved regimen consists of 35 one-hour sessions over seven weeks.
    Medical Benefits and Uses
EECP is used to treat patients with chronic stable angina who do not qualify for surgery or have not found relief with medication.
    • Increased Perfusion: Enhances blood flow (perfusion) to the heart muscle, encouraging the development of collateral vessels (natural bypass).
    • Reduced Workload: Reduces the workload of the heart and lowers systemic vascular resistance.
    • Improved Health Metrics: Shown to improve exercise tolerance and quality of life.
    Contraindications
EECP therapy is generally not recommended for individuals with severe valvular disease, high blood pressure, arrhythmias (like atrial fibrillation) that prevent ECG synchronization, or severe peripheral artery disease. According to the Cleveland Clinic, it is not used for unstable angina or while pregnant.

    People also ask
What is the use of ECP machine?
It uses pressure on your lower limbs to send more blood to your heart while it rests. As your heart begins to work better, your symptoms improve. Specialists believe ECP works by encouraging the growth of new pathways for your blood to flow, and boosting blood flow through vessels you already have.
