    • Working Principle:
      APFs monitor the load current, calculate harmonic components, and use a power inverter (IGBT) to inject equal-but-opposite compensation currents, effectively cancelling harmonics.
    • Types: The most common type is the shunt active power filter, which is connected in parallel with the nonlinear load to compensate for current harmonics.
    • Key Advantages:
      • Dynamic Mitigation: Unlike passive filters, they can adapt to changing load conditions and harmonic spectrums.
      • No Resonance: They do not create resonance issues in the power system.
      • Versatility: Capable of handling multiple harmonic orders simultaneously.
    • Applications: Essential for systems with high nonlinear loads, such as Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), data centers, and, arc furnaces, as noted by MTE Corporation[0].
    • Disadvantages: Generally higher cost, complex control algorithms, and lower efficiency compared to passive filters, with power losses ranging from 3% to 7%. 
    Comparison with Passive Filters
    While passive filters are cheaper and suitable for fixed loads, active filters provide superior, adaptive performance for fluctuating, complex, and high-power industrial loads.
