    AI Overview
An aerosol can with an aerosol valve is a pressurized, self-contained dispensing system that uses a propellant to expel product through a precision-engineered valve, converting liquid into a fine mist, spray, foam, or jet. The system consists of a container (aluminum or steel), product, propellant, and the valve-actuator assembly, which ensures airtight sealing and controlled release.
Key Components of an Aerosol Valve Assembly
The aerosol valve is the "control heart," featuring several precise components:
    • Actuator (Nozzle): The button pressed by the user, which determines the spray pattern and controls flow.
    • Valve Stem: A small, hollow tube connecting the actuator to the valve housing; it opens the valve when depressed.
    • Stem Gasket: A critical rubber seal that keeps the container airtight when not in use.
    • Spring: Ensures the stem returns to the sealed position after use.
    • Housing: A plastic cylinder that houses the spring and stem, connecting to the dip tube.
    • Dip Tube: A long plastic tube that draws the liquid from the bottom of the can.
    • Mounting Cup & Gasket: A metal cup, crimped to the can top, that holds the entire valve in place with a secure seal.
    Valve Types and Functionality
    • Continuous Spray Valve: Dispenses as long as the actuator is pressed; common for hairspray and paint.
    • Metered Dose Valve (MDV): Delivers a specific, measured amount per actuation, essential for pharmaceuticals.
    • Bag-on-Valve (BOV): Separates product from propellant in a sealed bag inside the can, ideal for, viscous products and maintaining purity.
    • 360° Valve: Allows for multi-angle or inverted spraying.
    How the Aerosol System Works
    1. Pressing the Actuator: Depresses the stem, moving its side ports below the gasket seal.
    2. Dispensing: Internal pressure forces the product-propellant mixture up the dip tube, into the stem, and out through the actuator.
    3. Atomization: The product expands rapidly as it moves from the high-pressure can to the low-pressure outside, breaking into tiny droplets.
    4. Closing: A spring returns the stem, resealing the gasket.

What are the different types of spray valves?
There are four main options: continuous feed, material inlet pressure range, batch (syringe), and syringe volume. Continuous feed spray valves are supplied from a large, “permanent” source. Batch or syringe valves can be supplied from a local syringe or barrel placed onto the valve (batch).

When did aerosol cans get banned?
But it all came to a halt in 1978, when the United States government banned the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), the propellant that was used in aerosol cans. In an announcement that shocked the world, scientists told us that CFCs were causing the formation of a massive hole in the ozone layer.Oct 7, 2010
