Yes, a servo motor needs a motor driver, especially for industrial and high-power applications, to handle the complex control signals, power, and feedback loops for precise motion. However, small "hobby" servos often have a driver built-in and can be controlled directly by a microcontroller's PWM pin, as long as they are not drawing excessive power.

Industrial/high-power servos:
Large, high-torque servos used in robotics or industrial automation require an external "servo amplifier" or driver. This is because they are much more powerful than what a microcontroller can provide.
Complex control:
Servo drives handle the precise control of position, speed, and torque using sophisticated feedback mechanisms from sensors like encoders, which are essential for industrial accuracy.
Power management:
A separate driver provides the necessary voltage and current, which can be too high for a microcontroller to deliver on its own. The driver also protects the motor from overcurrent and thermal issues.
Brushless servos:
These motors cannot be run by a simple DC input and absolutely require a specialized driver to achieve seamless rotation.
