A true Saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) is difficult to keep as a traditional bonsai due to its extremely slow growth—only a few inches in the first 10 years—and requirement for specific, deep root conditions. Instead, the Fairy Castle Cactus (Acanthocereus tetragonus) is commonly used to simulate the Saguaro's look, as it can be easily trained and pruned into a miniature, branched, tree-like form.
- Acanthocereus tetragonus 1. Bonsai can branch into different areas (pun intended). Is anyone else working with Cactus to create miniature tree forms? This Fairy Castle Cactus has been thickening for the past couple of years and the other day it was cut back, cleaned out and repotted into a proper pot. This species can re-create the look of the giant Saguaro Cactus in Arizona or other huge branched cactus tree species found in Mexico and other places. I got this specimen about 5 years ago from an older member of our Austin Bonsai Society who also appreciates odd species. It'll be interesting to see it progress as it is trimmed regularly and kept in a drier mix which should encourage thinner and smaller branching in the future. #Acanthocereustetragonus #fairycastlecactus #bonsai #bonsaicactus #austinbonsaisocietyThe Acanthocereus tetragonus, also known as the Fairy Castle Cactus, can be used to create miniature tree forms.
