    SO2 to SO3 Conversion Process Steps 
    1. Sulfur Melting & Burning: Solid sulfur is melted, pumped into a furnace, and burned with dried, filtered air to produce sulfur dioxide (
      S+O2→SO2cap S plus cap O sub 2 right arrow cap S cap O sub 2
      𝑆+𝑂2→𝑆𝑂2
      ).
    2. Gas Conditioning: The resulting
      SO2cap S cap O sub 2
      𝑆𝑂2
       gas is cooled to approximately

      °C
       to prepare for optimal catalyst function.
    3. Catalytic Conversion (Contact Process): The
      SO2cap S cap O sub 2
      𝑆𝑂2
      /air mixture passes through a converter packed with Vanadium Pentoxide (
      V2O5cap V sub 2 cap O sub 5
      𝑉2𝑂5
      ) catalyst.
      • Reaction:
        2SO2+O2⇌2SO32 cap S cap O sub 2 plus cap O sub 2 is in equilibrium with 2 cap S cap O sub 3
        2𝑆𝑂2+𝑂2⇌2𝑆𝑂3
         (Exothermic)
      • Adiabatic Stages: To maintain efficiency, the process typically uses multiple catalytic beds (adiabatic stages) with cooling steps in between to keep the temperature optimal (around
        420

        ), pushing the reversible reaction toward
        SO3cap S cap O sub 3
        𝑆𝑂3
         formation.
    4. Intermediate Absorption (Double Contact Process): In modern plants, the gas is passed through an intermediate absorption tower to remove
      SO3cap S cap O sub 3

       after the second stage. This shifts equilibrium, allowing the final stages to achieve

       total conversion.
    5. Final Absorption & Sulfonation: The resulting
      SO3cap S cap O sub 3
      𝑆𝑂3
       is mixed with dry air to form a gaseous mixture, which is then fed into a Falling Film Reactor (FFR) for direct reaction with organic raw materials (e.g., Alkylbenzene).
